Spirometry in Manchester, CT — The Essential Breathing Test for Your Lungs

- 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) — evaluates oxygen saturation during exertion
- Overnight Pulse Oximetry — monitors oxygen levels throughout the night
What Is Oxygen Testing?
Oxygen testing evaluates how well your body maintains blood oxygen levels — both during physical activity and while you sleep. For patients with chronic lung conditions such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, or sleep-related breathing disorders, these tests are often essential for determining whether supplemental oxygen is medically indicated.
At Advanced Pulmonary Care, we offer two complementary oxygen testing services:
Both tests are covered by most major insurance plans when medically indicated.
6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
What Is the 6-Minute Walk Test?
The 6-Minute Walk Test measures how far you can walk in six minutes and monitors your blood oxygen saturation throughout the effort. It is used to determine whether your oxygen levels drop to unsafe levels during physical activity — a condition that may not be apparent at rest.
Why It Matters
Many patients with chronic lung disease maintain acceptable oxygen levels while sitting still, but experience significant drops in saturation when they walk, climb stairs, or exert themselves. This is called exertional desaturation, and it can lead to organ damage, reduced quality of life, and increased cardiovascular strain if left unaddressed. The 6MWT provides objective evidence to determine whether you qualify for portable supplemental oxygen during activity.
- You will walk at your own pace in the office for six minutes on a measured course.
- A pulse oximeter monitors your heart rate and oxygen saturation continuously throughout the test.
- The test is non-invasive and requires no preparation beyond wearing comfortable walking shoes.
- Results are reviewed by Milos Tomic, APRN and discussed with you at your follow-up appointment.
- Have been diagnosed with COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, or another chronic lung condition
- Experience shortness of breath with activity that seems disproportionate to your effort
- Have been told your oxygen levels are borderline or are being monitored
- Are being evaluated for supplemental oxygen therapy
- Have unexplained fatigue, morning headaches, or frequent nighttime awakenings
- Have recently had a significant change in your respiratory symptoms or function
